Egypt Sets March Date For Presidential Elections

Egypt will hold its presidential elections between March 26 and 28 this year, the election commission revealed Monday.

First round results will be announced on April 2, and a runoff election will take place April 24-26, if needed.

Egypt Sets March Date for Presidential Elections

Former Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq announced a day earlier that he would not be running for president in the country’s 2018 elections, reversing a former promise to challenge the country’s general-turned-president Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, who is widely expected to win.

Sissi was Egypt’s army chief when he toppled the country’s first freely elected civilian president, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, in July 2013.
